GETTING AROUND

School Bus

If your university is situated in the middle of a bustling city, it’s quite easy to get around by walking as most campus buildings would be pretty close to your accommodation. However, if your accommodation is further away from your main campus, or the university is away from the city (where you would need to travel for groceries, visiting the bank, and other common errands), it would be more convenient to invest in a bus/metro pass to travel within the city. As the travel network in the UK is extensive, monthly or yearly student passes are quite cheap to come by! However, you should definitely also look into renting/buying a bike (if in the long run, costs are cheaper).

In addition to travelling within the city, as an international student, you may be interested in visiting other tourist cities (e.g. London, Edinburgh, etc. if your university isn’t situated there). As the UK has an excellent transport system, it is possible to travel by bus, train, flight or coach to neighbouring cities for affordable prices. Similarly to the bus pass, students can apply for a 16-25 railcard that allows you to save â…“ on travel (by train). Travelling by flight is obviously the more expensive option as the journey duration is a lot shorter.

If you’re heading to university in London, the most convenient (and cheap) way to travel is by purchasing an Oyster card (which can be used for most types of public transport)- other cities may have similar deals for students.
